I will be making the long drive soon,
for my first return to the city where my mom lived... and died.

Now I will return to visit her grave and the grave of my dad.

Though I am making plans to drive the same route that had grown so familiar,
This will be so different.

On this drive, as I approach my destination,
I won't be making my "usual call" to let Mom know that I'm "almost there."
And I won't hear a frail voice on the other end brighten up and say "oh goody."
I won't be stopping by the grocery store to pick up a list of items she needs.
I won't be greeted by a "Welcome Home" sign taped to the door.

I may be traveling the same road,
But this won't be the same sort of trip.
