Singing and Dancing in the Face of Death    Oct 24, 2005

Long night.
Mom slept, each breath a struggle.
Most of the night, I listened.
Almost counting each breath.

Morning came.
Mom’s energy gone.
I helped her to the bathroom,
A long and arduous journey yet only ten feet.

Moving Mom to the living room,
I face the challenge of lifting her from the wheelchair
And settling her into her recliner.

As I held her up, with my arms around her
And her arms around me…
I glanced over to a picture on the wall.
There was a picture of my mom and dad dancing on a cruise ship.
We now stood in her living room in almost the identical pose.

I commented to her, “I am pleased to have this dance.”
Despite the pain, she smiled. I lowered her into her chair.
Our last dance was brief.

Later that morning, a very sweet Hospice social worker
Tenderly and softly spoke to Mom.
Then I heard her gently singing a hymn to her.
What a tender and precious moment.
Her voice so angelic.
My tears flowed.

No festive atmosphere here, but
Yes there was singing and dancing in this room today.
